Friday Five – You’re a Friend of Mine
It’s Friday, so it must be time for The Friday Five writing prompt! Five different words each week to get the creative juices flowing. To visit the other participants, click here.
This week’s words are: whip, permission, election, finished, legislation
I know some of you might be wanting some #SaveFred content, but I need to get back into the swing of things, including re-reading my own story in order to keep moving forward. So, for now, just a little miscellaneous flash fiction π
“Whip it, whip it good!” Laura giggled after she finished the lyric and kept jogging down the hallway to the auditorium. She’d unexpectedly been nominated for class president in the last election and then, even more unexpectedly, she’d had the most votes when the count (and the recount…it was that close) had finished.
Now she had to pass her first piece of legislation: the theme to the senior prom. Very important stuff, she thought with a quick eyeroll. But she knew she’d need a little help to pass an 80s theme, so she’d dressed the part and wore an orange painted flowerpot on her head, along with a jumpsuit. She’d asked a few friends to also dress in theme, though not as weirdly as she had (because everyone who knew her would expect her to be a bit eccentric).
She entered the auditorium and had the undivided attention of the entire senior class, whose permission she needed to move ahead with her plan. With a smile and a grin, she walked to the podium. But before she could even open her mouth, the group of 257 students began to sing in unison.
“Years may come and go
Here’s one thing I know
All my life
You’re a friend of mine”And then, from behind her the homecoming queen and girl she’d defeated in the election stepped forward looking like Madonna in the “Lucky Star” video and said, “Of course we’ll do the 80s. Nothing could be cooler.”
(Note from the author — ME! — If you can name the song those last lyrics came from, you’re an 80s afficionado).
Aw, I love this! And I wouldn’t be surprised at kids jumping on an 80’s theme – retro is in it seems. And we def need to find Fred. π Had to Google the song – it was familiar but I couldn’t quite place it either. But I did get the Devo reference, so I’m 50/50 today.
The return of the Terrible Trio is here.
Fun story! And love retro parties (though my tastes go just a tad earlier ;-))
