Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: My Greatest Weakness

It’s time again for the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews.
Today’s topic is: My Greatest Weakness
This is surprisingly hard, because I don’t deny I have faults (I’m impatient, type A+++, a perfectionist, I have a temper), but I don’t necessarily consider those things “weaknesses”.

After much agonizing to find a legitimate “weakness” I came up with: being overwhelmed.
I can juggle a lot of things. I’m a skilled multi-tasker. But even so, now and then I have SO much to do, and it’s all wicked important and needs to be done yesterday that… I freeze up. I can’t do ANYTHING because I’m utterly overwhelmed. It makes me mad when this happens because I recognize that staring blankly at the computer isn’t HELPING, not even a little bit, and just starting something would be better than nothing, but I just can’t.
Worse, worrying about it makes everything worse. The best thing I can do is walk away. Get outside. Play fetch with the dogs. Wash the dishes. Do something routine and simple. Once I step back, I can see more clearly and begin to organize things in an order that can be dealt with.
But, yeah, if you want to knock me off kilter, give me fifty things to do and a deadline of yesterday. I’ll just sit at the desk and drool…

  1. You mean staring at the computer in an utter frozen overwhelmed stupor isn’t normal?
Lol. I don’t know if it’s a weakness, but you can be blunt. I’d say it’s a gift, but I’ve known you a while. 🙂 Still love ya.

  2. Three responses to stress: Fight, Flight and Freeze. People tend to forget the freeze part, but it is an important part of dealing with stress. Think of it as a warning sign. If you want your imagination to work, you have to de-stress. I know, much easier said than done. Sorry I taught high school Psychology and dealing with stress was one of my focus points. Kids today are stressed out ten times what I faced in the 60’s and 70’s.

    1. Kids these days not only have more stress, but they’re not equipped as well as we were to deal with it. It’s a shame.

  3. Getting started again when you’re overwhelmed is definitely a problem. Knowing when to take a break and get some perspective is a highly underrated skill!

  4. I find its so easy to get overwhelmed today. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to deliver, and be everything to everybody. Freezing I think is our body’s way of telling us its time to stop.
