It’s a Party!
My absolute favorite time of year is Halloween. I love the spookiness, the fun, the costumes. I love ghost stories and bobbing for apples. Watching scary movies and stumbling through haunted houses. What I don’t like about it is when I have to work…You see, I’m a bartender.
Even on the best of days (or, perhaps I should say, nights) people can be annoying as they get drunk, but Halloween is one of the worse holidays in a bar. People trying to articulate what it is they want me to give them (I have a rule: if you can’t say the name of your drink… if “Purple Hooter” comes out “PooPoo Hoodoo”…you’re cut off), hitting on me (I’ll let you in on a secret: we bartenders have a game we play…”collect the phone number”…and whoever gets the most at the end of the night wins a prize), or just generally walking around in their way-too-short witch’s costumes, confused and blurry-eyed.
I really do like my job, most nights, but Halloween? Not so much. So this year? I begged off and had a party at my place instead. With a couple dozen eight-year-old kids; friends of my nephew. And I’ve never smiled so much, because… I had everything I wanted. Spookiness, fun, and costumes. Ghost stories and bobbing for apples. Scary movies, and a homemade haunted house created in the backyard.
Let me tell you… adulting is way less fun than childhood. I highly recommend revisiting it.
fun! I had to go back and look for the words… good job.
Wow! This was great. I couldn’t imagine what I’d be like to be a bartender. It seems like a difficult job actually.
Nice!!
Halloween with kids is a thousand times better than it is with adults, drunk or sober!
Your right …I was so happy to have grandchildren so I could be a kid again. So much fun and you know they had a ball!
