Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Rereading books? Why or Why not?

It’s time again for the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews.
Today’s topic is: Rereading books? Why or Why not?
Do I re-read books? YES. Mostly.
Honestly, books are all about the journey… with some exceptions. I tend not to reread mysteries because, really, the story there is all about the ending. And once you know it (with some exceptions), it’s no fun to read again. A mystery along the lines of the movie “Sixth Sense”? Well, sure, you’d need to read it again to pick up on all the things you didn’t notice the first time. But I’m not sure it lends itself to continual re-reading.
The books I re-read tend to be those where the characters have become my friends. They also are typically part of a series (probably because you get more attached the more time you spend with them). I have a large number of fantasy series I reread (The Dragonriders of Pern, The Valdemar series, etc), and most recently I found it necessary to reread the Chronicles of Narnia (I’d watched two of the movies on Disney+ and NEEDED to read “The Last Battle”, but also needed to get there first).
Also on my “keeper” shelf (and they’re only keepers if I’m going to read them again) I have most of Nora Roberts’ trilogies (with the except of her last one — it kind of sucked, honestly… I was so disappointed), several of her single title romantic suspense novels, some of her “In Death” books and most of the books Jennifer Crusie wrote.
When I just need a comforting, brainless (because I know the story and don’t have to concentrate THAT hard) book to read, I return to my keeper shelf. Sometimes revisiting old friends is exactly what I need when I’m feeling unsettled, frustrated, or sad.
Here’s a sad tidbit though… my vision is getting so bad, I’m struggling to read regular print books anymore which means I can’t really read those books. Many of them I can borrow online via my library, but there’s nothing quite like a print book. So, I have to decide if I want to start looking for large print versions or not.
Getting old kinda sucks…
PS. I rewatch movies, too! 🙂

  1. I’m collecting the In Death series…. I want to have them all and (one day) sit down and have a marathon. At that time, I’ll reread the ones I’ve already read

  2. The Chronicles of Narnia is a series I’m thinking about reading to my kids at bedtime. I read those books so long ago, I can’t even remember if I finished the series. I think I might have missed a book. It’ll be nice to revisit!

  3. Then I’m a weirdo because I don’t reread often. There are too many books out there. But I will watch movies over and over. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington grabs me every time. So does Field of Dreams.

  4. My answer was very similar to yours, except I do hang on to a number of books that I don’t necessarily re-read frequently. (This has proven advantageous as Firstborn moves into his teen years, though, so I’m not complaining.)
