Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Books I Love that Became Films or TV Shows

It’s time again for the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. Books I Love that Became Films or TV Shows
The first books to come to mind for me were the Chronicles of Narnia. I really think they did a good job with the three movies they made. Were they perfect? Of course not, but they were good. They kept what was most important to the story and didn’t screw with stuff that mattered.
I was originally really excited to see the mini-series “Shannara” come out. It’s based on “The Elfstone of Shannara” and they did a pretty good job with it… right up to the end. Aside from the tree thing (I don’t want to be more specific than that as it’s a HUGE spoiler if I say more), they changed everything about the way the book ended. I understand why, I suppose: they wanted to have a second season (and in the book series, the next book is about the children of the people featured in “Elfstones”). Still, it was bad enough, I never even watched the next season.
I’ve heard rumors that “The Dragonriders of Pern” has been optioned for a film. I’m both really excited by the possibility, and worried to death they’ll ruin it. This series was something I was absolutely freaky about from my early teens until, well … now.
Other than that, I suppose “The Black Stallion” movie was pretty well done. Yeah, they changed some things (not the least of which was Alec’s age), but all-in-all a pretty decent adaptation.
What about you? What books you love have been made into film? Did you love them or hate them?

  1. I’ve never seen the Narnia movies ( or read the books), but I’ve heard they were good ( both screen and page!) Never heard of your other choice.

  2. Yeah, I was pretty happy with the Chronicles of Narnia movies, too. I’d love to see the later books in that series made into films as well someday.
    My post.

  3. I watched the first Narnia movie (Hello, James McAvoy was a centaur) and I liked it, but it’s on the list of…I cried at the end and can’t watch it again… Good list. I’ve never read the Dragonriders book.

  4. I had so much hope for Shannara because it started so well. They really ought to have started with the Heritage trilogy that started right after Wishsong ended – with Wren, Walker, and Par. They could have gotten several seasons out of that and they were better books from what I can remember (it’s been a Druid’s age since I’ve read them though).
Netflix is supposed to be working on something… and I’m suddenly drawing a blank… that I was actually really excited for. Ha, apparently not so much at the moment since I can’t even remember what it was.

  5. I wouldn’t mind a Pern series.
I tried to watch Shannara, but it was all over the place for me. The elves were a bit too ‘cool teen’ for me to take seriously.

  6. I loved both Narnia and Black Stallion. I don’t think I’d want to see the shows, though. Those books are etched in my memory and I wouldn’t want anything to change my own vision.
